Dull mkt ends up 0.5% as FM defers GAAR by one yr

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty took 'U' turn in a final hour of trading after the finance minister Pranab Mukherjee changed the implementation of the general anti-avoidance rule (GAAR) by one year. Short covering and influx of foreign money has led to the recovery on Monday.
The Indian rupee bounced back very sharply Pranab following commentary and rumors of RBI too aided by the rebound in money. It moved 1% or 58 paise to 52.88 a dollar.

The BSE benchmark has earned 81.63 points or 0.48%, to close at 16,912.71 after seeing a recovery of nearly 400 points from days low of 16,513.77. Market has taken a big knock today due to the weaker than expected U.S. jobs data and uncertainty over the policies of austerity after the elections in Greece and France. France's CAC and Germany DAX too pared losses after initial knee jerk reaction - both of the market fell from 0.2 to 0.6%. The Dow Jones futures dropped only 57 points (where the head of 124 points at one point of time).
Back home, the benchmark NSE struggled to 5000 levels to a point of time, which surpassed the 5100 level in late trade, it is closed at 5114.15, up 27.30 points or 0.54%.
In a speech about the Finance Bill 2012 in Lok Sabha, Pranab Mukherjee said GAAR is implemented with effect from April 1, 2013 instead of April 2012. The government has halved the capital gains tax for private equity investors in 10% and relaxed the norms for the arrest of people involved in the violation of the Customs Act.
Investment advisor SP Tulsian believe that a year remedy provides adequate time to the FIIs to either create a set up or adjust their portfolios and a call market.
"The government has decided to withdraw the levy (one per cent excise duty) on all precious metal jewelery, Branded or unbranded, with effect from on March 17, 2012," she announced. Titan Industries surged 3.5% and Gitanjali Gems earned 1.5%.
