Karunanidhi backtracks, says will be in UPA with bitterness

The DMK boss and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday threatened to pull the UPA government and within an hour or so of making threats, made a U-turn, and said that his party will continue to the UPA government even if there is no rollback of fuel price hike.
While making a U-turn, Karunanidhi said he expected the Prime Minister is a good decision. "Even if the price hike is not rolled back, continue to manage with bitterness. We do not want to create a crisis during the Presdiential election. If we come now, it will only help the non-secular forces the back, "Karunanidhi said explaining his reason for toning down its commitment to fuel price hike that he articulated when leading the DMK protests agaist to walk in a public meeting.
Leading the protests of the party, the leader of a key ally of the Congress party and coalition partners, Karunanidhi was given a veiled threat of pulling out unless there is a complete roll back the price hike, which was cheered by party cadres.
"For us being part of the coalition at the center does not stop us from protesting against anti-people policies. If our fundamental principles is threatened we can persuade the center to correct it," Karunanidhi said.
"We will insist and stay with them simply as possible. If they do not heed we leave our separate press principles. If the price hikes are not withdrawn there are many agitations," Karunanidhi said hinting at possibly pulling out of the UPA.
Senior DMK leader leaders echoed their sentiments on the issue and said once the allies were not consulted on important decisions, some of the anti-people.
Threatening the DMK had political circles agog with expectations, but observers here point out that the regional parties are hardly in a position to carry out his threat. Like the previous occasion, the DMK this time too is exerting pressure but eventually give in, as there is hardly any other option left for it after its rout in the assembly elections.
Arriving a day before the nation-wide move by the opposition party, the DMK resistance as well as the threat is seen as a tactic to exert pressure on the Congress government, which is facing another challenge presidential poll.
